Coop is constantly striving for improvements around sustainability and is also investing in various logistics projects. The latest project is a newly developed, fully automated packaging system that can produce a tailor-made shipping package for each product. Thanks to the new machine, filling material will no longer be needed, saving Interdiscount and 70 tons of paper per year. The packaging system – which comes from a company in the Bernese region – uses sustainable recycled cardboard. In future, the paper delivery note will be sent to customers by e-mail and can be viewed in the customer account at any time.

Innovation and automation for parcel shipments
Online trading has grown significantly and has received an increased boost this year. Interdiscount and expect to send a total of around two million parcels from the logistics centre in Jegenstorf in 2020. Last year, the million mark was exceeded, which corresponds to ten times the package volume of 2010. The new parcel packaging machine can handle the rapidly growing volumes and processes up to 600 parcels per hour fully automatically. From now on, the only manual process will be placing the items on the infeed belt to the automatic parcel packaging machine. The further processes from measuring the order and cutting the cardboard sheet to packing, closing and labelling are fully automated. The parcels are then transported via conveyor belts directly through the new parcel chute to the parcel loading area. Thanks to the new Swiss packaging system, the efficiency of parcel shipping can be significantly increased.

Expansion of the logistics system
Now that the two Coop subsidiaries have put a modern, fully automated logistics centre into operation in Jegenstorf in May 2018, the plant is being expanded. In addition to parcel shipments, other areas of logistics have also been optimised. Four new goods receiving stations and two additional picking stations for order commissioning were installed. Furthermore, the new second container lift enables a higher conveying capacity between shuttle warehouse, picking stations and parcel dispatching. In the additional Interdiscount and warehouse in Zollikofen, capacity was already tripled at the beginning of the year. It now offers 4,500 storage spaces for large items.
