British-Dutch consumer goods group Unilever received the highest accolade at a prestigious packaging excellence award ceremony, reports.

The DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation recognised 16 brands out of a record 200 international entrants. The independent judges gave the night’s top prize, the Diamond Award, to Unilever for its line in compressed deodorant cans.

Unilever’s recently adapted cans, which hold the same amount of product as the full-size versions, use 25 per cent less aluminium and half the amount of propellant as was previously required, writes.

As such, the judges applauded Unilever for excellence across all three of the competition’s judging criteria: enhanced user experience, responsible packaging and technological advancement.

DuPont explained its decision: “Unilever’s new containers carry the same amount of product in a package half the size of the original. The smaller packages meet airline carry-on requirements, allow retailers to stock more products on the same shelf space and significantly cut transportation costs as more units fit on a pallet and into each truck.”

Among the other brands that were recognised was Procter & Gamble Co for its ‘smart-dosing liquid cap’, which dispenses the precise amount of product based on a clever timing mechanism; this won a Gold Award.

Presented with a Silver Award for Responsible Packaging was British firm Nambak Plastics Europe Ltd. The judges hailed its line of lightweight milk containers, which use 20 per cent less material.
