Crantock Bakery is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of Cornish pasties, making 70,000 pasties a day to supply the UK and European market. Increased productivity has been achieved by replacing a slow and unreliable packaging machine with a robust and reliable FP095 flow wrapper from KernPack.
Its roots began in the quaint coastal village of Crantock, just 2 miles south west of the Cornish resort of Newquay, on Cornwall’s Atlantic Coast. In 1981 a small family run butchers decided to make and sell hand crafted Cornish pasties as a side line to their existing business. Making the most of the finest local beef and vegetables, and using a traditional 100 year old recipe, they supplied their Cornish pasties to local shops and villagers.
The individually hand crimped ‘D’ shaped pasties proved to be extremely popular, and due to the high demand for this quality product the business grew quickly. After only 4 years they needed to expand into new premises, and in just ten years expansion led to a move to their purpose built premises not too far from their original home. With continued growth in sales and bigger contracts on the horizon, the bakery urgently needed to replace their packaging equipment to keep up with demand.
Crantock Bakery’s Head of Packaging, Helen Chudleigh explains “Unfortunately our old packaging machine was clunky and slow. Its functionality was limited and we were experiencing lots of problems with it. We had another large contract to fulfil and so it was important to find a machine that could meet and exceed our requirements”.
Production took giant leaps forward after taking delivery of KernPack’s FP095 flow wrapping system. Says Helen “The transformation from what we’d had previously was incredible. Also, we didn’t realise how flexible the machine was and since then and with Kern’s help we’ve made more modifications to maximise its potential even further”.
The pasties are hand fed onto the conveyor belt, individually flow wrapped and then hand packed into boxes. “We can run small sausage rolls up to the large pasties through this machine. I’m really impressed with this machine and can’t knock it” states Helen.
Crantock entered the British Pie Awards and won the prestigious ‘Best Cornish Pasty’ in 2011, which meant they officially made the best pasty in the country. During that same year their pasties were also awarded the coveted EU Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) mark which is a scheme that protects product names from misuse and imitation that are closely linked to a geographical area.
Customer demand has meant that Crantock’s impressive product range now includes sausage rolls, hand raised pies, scones, vegetarian pasties, turnovers, pastries and the traditional Cornish heavy cake.
The KernPack FP095 horizontal electronic multi axis flow wrapping machine is KernPack’s fully electronic solution for clients who require a quality entry level flow wrapper.
