Wheat and gluten free bakery specialists Wheat Free Bakery wanted to significantly increase their output, while also achieving a high standard of packaging. Working with KernPack, Wheat Free Bakery modernised its production factory with the addition of a new flow wrapping system.

Based in Scotland, the family owned bakery supplies 70% of its products to consumers and 30% to local wholesalers. Established 2.5 years ago, Wheat Free Bakery has a workforce of 17 and a £1.5 million turnover.

Wheat Free Bakery has achieved an impressive reputation for producing top quality products which surpass those that were traditionally available for customers with specific dietary needs. With over 20 year’s experience within the industry combined with specialist research, Colin Sneddon, Founder and Owner, realised that he could introduce superior products to the market and to a much wider customer base too. “The company has grown significantly by 400% and we have plans to expand into the Canadian market.”

With two outdated packaging machines on site, Colin was keen to modernise his equipment to achieve an excellent seal and high quality packaging finish.

“It was important to find a system that would consistently deliver high quality flow wrapped products and a solution that would remain up to date in years to come” explained Colin. “It was also essential that the system had the flexibility and modularity to be added at a later date.”

After extensive research of the packaging market, Wheat Free Bakery chose KernPack’s FP016 evo flow wrapping machine. With the capability to process bakery products at a rate of up to 150 per minute, the quality of the system and the end result were the main reasons why Wheat Free Bakery chose KernPack’s system, as Colin explained ” we looked at other solutions, however none of them were as advanced in terms of quality, system performance and overall system longevity for years to come. I didn’t want to invest money into a packaging system that would gather dust after a couple of years. I needed something that would last me into the future too. I’m impressed with how modern the FP016 evo flow wrapper is. The quality and consistency of the packaging it produces is fantastic and there’s not much film waste either.”

System flexibility was also a key factor in the decision making process, “being able to add to the system at a later date was of equal importance. Knowing that the flow wrapper can cater for additional product volumes in the future is a big plus for us. We’re in a position where we need to move to new premises and when the time comes, I know that the machine will have capability to do it.”

Wheat Free Bakery has a proven track record for delivering high quality products and so it was important for them to find a partner with the same principles “I explored every avenue until I found a partner that could offer a solution which would achieve the best results to match my products.”

Designed to produce uniformity, the end product is consistently processed with a high quality finish” enthused Colin. “Because the end product looks so much better, with an excellent seal and more aesthetically pleasing too, we’re able to sell our products to a wider range of discerning customer. I’m delighted with our new system and with the results it has achieved. I’m always looking to move my business forward in the right direction.”

Another key benefit in choosing to work with KernPack was its people, commented Colin. “The customer service from KernPack has been fantastic and the packaging experience they have has been invaluable too.”
